More like big-screen dream, amirite? (What.) According to THR, Paramount -- buoyed by strong box-office returns for "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" -- is in discussions with Imagine Entertainment to create a "documentary-style film" about pop star Katy Perry. In 3D, of course. No deals are in place, but this will obviously be the greatest concert movie ever. Perry has unleashed a bevy of massive hits onto Top-40 radio over the last four years, including "I Kissed A Girl," "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework," "Last Friday Night," "E.T.," and "The One That Got Away." As you may have heard, she also experienced a bit of personal life turmoil when her marriage to Russell Brand ended in December of 2011. Concert movies have become du jour again in Hollywood following the successes of "Never Say Never," Michael Jackson's "This Is It" and "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour." Of course, the genre has also seen some notable flops, including "Glee: The 3D Concert Movie," which grossed an underwhelming $11 million last August. Whether Kitty Purry fans will pay to see the flamboyant pop staple on the big screen -- especially when the film will be upcharged thanks to 3D -- remains to be seen. Though, really, who could pass up the chance to see something like the video for "California Gurls" in three dimensions? Exploding whipped cream cannon bras, y'all! [via THR] VIDEO:

Darth Maul is apparently getting his day in the sun(s). According to the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog, the Sith assassin's face will be featured on select 3D glasses when "Star Wars Episode I" returns to theaters February 10. Those who buy tickets on opening day will have the chance to snag the collectibles, along with the new "Star Wars" fighter pod from Hasbro. If you're keeping score at home, that is now two major promotional items for "Phantom Menace 3D" that feature Maul , which is strange considering he's in the film for a grand total of ten minutes. So, congratulations Darth Maul, a.k.a. the 16th best character from the franchise! Enjoy your 15 minutes of marketing fame before Obi-Wan desposes of you. (Spoiler alert?) [via LAT/Hero Complex]

On Feb. 10, "Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace" gets re-released in 3D. There are many things about "The Phantom Menace" not to like: Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, the taxation of galactic trade routes. There is one thing that we all did seem to like: Darth Maul. The only problem? Darth Maul is in "The Phantom Menace" for about ten minutes. If that. Of course, Maul's lack of screen time did not prevent Lucasfilm from putting him front and center on the new re-release posters. "Hey, remember this guy? You liked him. Come see this movie again." Maul's dominant presence on the poster is borderline false advertising. To illustrate this, we've prepared six more re-release movie poster from some of your favorite films, and what they might look like if they were prepared for a re-release in the same manor as "The Phantom Menace."
"Platoon" "In 1986, Oliver Stone released his groundbreaking account of the Vietnam War. This spring, Johnny Depp returns as... Lerner."
"The Thin Red Line" "Golden Globe winner George Clooney is Capt. Charles Bosche!"
"J.D. & Thelma & Louise" "Hey, it's Brad Pitt!"
"Saving Private Ryan" "You loved him in 'Fast Five.' Now, relive Vin Diesel as Private First Class Adrian Caparzo!"
"Top Gun" "Experience the magic of Tim Robbins as Merlin in 'Top Gun,' again!"
"Apocalypse Now" "This summer, the man who brought you Indiana Jones and Han Solo is back, as Colonel Lucas!" (Images by Catarina Ferreira) You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter.

‘Nemo’ Found in 3D

After the 3D re-release of "The Lion King"raked in a staggering $29.3 million its opening weekend, it gave Disney execs an idea: let's keep doing this!

Between now and 2013, four Disney converted classics will make their way to the big screen. The first up is 1991 favorite "Beauty and the Beast," out this weekend. That will be followed later this year by 2003 hit, "Finding Nemo."

Disney has released a short trailer for the beloved classic, complete with a kinda hacked up version of Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea." The clip is a reminder of just how adorable the film is -- though hearing Albert Brooks, last seen sticking a fork into some poor gangster's eyeball in "Drive," as Nemo's doting dad is jarring? Yeah, definitely jarring.

"Finding Nemo 3D" opens Sept. 14th.

ThinkGeek Announces Star Wars Lightsaber Popsicles and De-3D Glasses (Video)

April 1st, 2011 Cinematical 3D No comments

Yup, in case you didn’t know, today is April 1, aka April Fools’ Day. This is a day that divides us in two — from the people who play along and laugh off the foolish holiday, to the people who get really angry and annoyed at the people playing jokes because they’re, like, stupid and immature and not ultra-serious all the time.

While you decide which April Fools’ Day fan (or non-fan) you are, we just wanted to take a moment to point out the funny gags ThinkGeek unveiled today. The company is known for their creative April Fools’ merchandise pranks, so much so that one of their older pranks — the Tauntaun sleeping bag — was so popular that ThinkGeek actually created the real thing a year later. Will the same happen for 2011?

Perhaps with their Star Wars-related Lightsaber Popsicles (a pretty neat idea, for sure – check out video after the jump), though something tells us their De-3D glasses — which turn annoying 3D images back into comforting 2D images — won’t catch on as fast (though we admit it’s hilarious). Check out all the fun merch jokes they unveiled today over on the site and let us know your favorites (we’re especially diggin’ the Super 3DBoy iPhone System and Playmobil Apple Store Playset).

We remain unconvinced that converting ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ to 3D will make the film any less boring than it already is, but that isn’t stopping George Lucas from forging ahead with plans to bring an eye-popping version of the feature back to theaters next February. Just think how exciting all those Galactic Senate scenes will be in three dimensions!

Last night, Lucas finally spilled the beans on who will handle the movie’s 2D-to-3D conversion process: post-production firm Prime Focus.

Hit the jump for why that makes us nervous.

Paul W. S. Anderson Talks ‘Resident Evil,’ Video Games, 3D and ‘The Three Musketeers’

“Jean-Luc Godard once said, ‘All you need to make a great movie is a girl and a gun.’ And that’s definitely my approach to filmmaking.”
– Paul W.S. Anderson

Welcome to part two of Cinematical’s interview with Paul W. S. Anderson (here’s part one)! After ‘Shopping’ got the attention of Hollywood industry types, Anderson kicked off his mainstream career with ‘Mortal Kombat.’ From there, his path led him towards bigger and even more sci-fi/action-infused flicks like ‘Event Horizon’ and, of course, the ‘Resident Evil’ movies based on the Capcom video games. Here he discusses the evolution of the franchise, 3D versus 2D and his upcoming 3D action period piece, ‘The Three Musketeers.’

The ‘Resident Evil’ movies are interesting because the first one started out as a more straight horror movie like the video games, but the other ones have a different feeling to them. What made you decide to take it in a more science fiction direction?

There have always been a lot of science fiction elements in the original source material, in the Resident Evil games themselves. Even though the first game is set in a decaying gothic mansion, you discover beneath the gothic mansion is this high-tech research laboratory where something terrible has gone wrong, so it was a kind of mix of the science fiction and the gothic elements that really interested me in ‘Resident Evil.’ Then the games again, they have a lot of kind of high-tech weaponry in them, they have a lot of bio-engineering in them; that’s all part of the, these science-fiction ideas are all part of the DNA of the video game so we were kind of staying true to the game in one regard. The reason why the movies changed and continue to change is that I personally believe that if a franchise is to survive and to grow, you can’t just deliver the same movie over and over again.

Which ‘Star Wars’ Film Will Work Best in 3D?

March 10th, 2011 Cinematical 3D No comments

Filed under: Best Movies Ever, Hot Topic, Coming Soon, Sci-Fi, Cinematical

Last week, Lucasfilm finally announced an official date for the release of ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ in 3D: Feb. 10, 2012. Whether you love or hate the prequels, ‘The Phantom Menace’ is the first film in the series — especially for fans who consider them, and not the original trilogy, generational benchmarks — and it is natural for Lucas and 20th Century Fox to start at the beginning of the saga. But the question isn’t whether the prequels should be the trilogy to initiate this cinematic re-release, it’s whether they’re the films that will truly make the best use of 3D; no matter which order you choose to see these six films, some of them feature scenes and sequences which will simply look better when converted into three dimensions.

So in descending order from worst to best, we’ve decided to put together a countdown of which ‘Star Wars’ films will make the best use of 3D overall, and which scenes in those films will (presumably) look the best once you’re in the theater with your glasses on, ready to finally be truly immersed in the world George Lucas created such a long time ago.
